What Is D3O?
Before getting into T6 specifically, it helps to understand what D3O is at its core.
D3O is a rate-sensitive impact material developed by a UK-based materials science company. It's built around a class of materials called dilatant compounds — substances whose viscosity increases under rapid stress. In plain terms: D3O flows freely and stays soft during normal movement, but when it experiences a sudden, high-speed impact, the molecules lock together and the material stiffens almost instantaneously, absorbing and dispersing the impact energy.
The result is protective gear that feels like soft, flexible fabric during normal use — and acts like a rigid shield the moment you need it. This is fundamentally different from traditional foam armor, which is always stiff, or gel-based padding, which compresses but doesn't actively stiffen on impact.
D3O technology is used across multiple product lines and formulations, each optimized for different applications. T6 is one of those formulations — and it has a specific feature that sets it apart.
What Makes D3O T6 Different?
Standard D3O is a soft, flexible material. It's excellent at absorbing impact energy, but like all soft armor, it has a limitation: it doesn't resist puncture.
Puncture resistance matters when you're riding in environments where sharp objects are a real hazard — rocks, roots, exposed hardware on rails or features, gravel, or any terrain where a fall could put a pointed object in contact with your body at speed. Standard soft armor compresses on impact but can be penetrated by sharp edges.
D3O T6 addresses this by adding a hard outer shell over the D3O smart material core. The construction is a two-layer system:
- Hard outer shell: A rigid puncture-resistant layer that deflects sharp objects before they can reach the body
- D3O smart material core: The rate-sensitive layer underneath that absorbs and disperses the impact energy that the shell transmits
Together, these two layers handle two different types of threat: the shell deals with puncture and abrasion, the D3O core deals with blunt impact force. Neither layer alone does both jobs as well as the combination.
CE Level 1 Certification — and What It Covers
D3O T6 is certified to CE EN 1621-1 Level 1, the European standard for limb protectors. Level 1 requires that the protector transmit no more than 35 kN of peak force during impact testing.
It's important to understand what CE certification tests — and what it doesn't. The CE 1621 standard tests impact attenuation: how much blunt force passes through the protector to the body. It does not test puncture resistance. Two protectors can both be CE Level 1 certified, but one may be soft foam with no puncture resistance, and the other may be D3O T6 with a hard shell that deflects sharp objects entirely.
The CE rating tells you about impact absorption. The construction tells you about puncture protection. D3O T6 delivers both.

D3O T6 vs. Standard D3O: Side by Side
| Feature | Standard D3O | D3O T6 |
|---|---|---|
| Impact attenuation | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Rate-sensitive stiffening | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Soft and flexible at rest | ✓ Yes | Partially — shell adds some rigidity |
| Puncture resistance | ✕ No | ✓ Yes (hard outer shell) |
| CE 1621 Level 1 certified | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Best for | General impact protection, comfort-first use | Rocky terrain, technical trails, park features |
D3O T6 vs. D3O A.I.
D3O also produces a formulation called D3O A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), which is a different kind of upgrade from standard D3O. Where T6 adds a puncture shell, A.I. improves the smart material itself — delivering better impact attenuation at lower thickness through an enhanced molecular formulation.
- D3O A.I. = thinner, lighter, better impact absorption. No puncture shell. Best for riders who want maximum comfort and low profile.
- D3O T6 = CE Level 1 impact absorption + hard puncture shell. Slightly more rigid. Best for riders who need protection against sharp terrain features.
Both are significant upgrades over standard D3O, but they solve different problems. The right choice depends on your terrain and priorities.
Who Should Choose D3O T6?
D3O T6 is the right choice when:
- You ride rocky, rooty terrain where sharp-edged impacts are common
- You ride bike park features — rails, boxes, and jumps where metal edges are a hazard
- You want CE Level 1 comfort and wearability but need more real-world protection than standard soft armor provides
- You've experienced puncture-type injuries from falls and want a material that actively deflects sharp objects
D3O T6 is not the right choice if:
- You prioritize absolute minimum bulk and maximum flexibility above all else (standard D3O or D3O A.I. will be more comfortable)
- You need CE Level 2 protection for high-speed, high-consequence riding (T6 is Level 1 only)
Where D3O Technology Is Used in Demon United Gear
D3O technology — including T6, A.I., and RF formulations — is used across Demon United's impact protection lineup.
- Demon United X V7 D3O® Men's Impact Padded Top — D3O A.I. protection for chest, back, and shoulders
- Demon United X V7 D3O® Women's Impact Padded Top
- Demon United X V7 D3O® A.I. Men's Impact Padded Shorts

The Bottom Line
D3O T6 is CE Level 1 certified impact protection with a hard puncture-resistant outer shell — a combination that standard soft armor doesn't offer. The CE rating covers blunt impact attenuation. The shell covers puncture and sharp-edge hazards. Together, they give you a more complete real-world protection profile than either element alone.
